Breaking;Travis Kelce’s former teammate tells Kansas City Chiefs how to handle his future

LeSean McCoy urged Travis Kelce to take as much time as he needs before deciding on his NFL future following the Kansas City Chiefs’ defeat in the Super Bowl.

On Sunday, the Philadelphia Eagles won 40-22 against the Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX at the Superdome. The Eagles clinched a second Lombardi Trophy in franchise history thanks to Vic Fangio’s dominant defense that overwhelmed Patrick Mahomes, Kelce, and the offense.

Kelce was held to four catches for 39 yards in the loss to the Eagles, a defeat that ended Kansas City’s hopes of becoming the first team to ever win three successive Super Bowl titles. Across the 2024 season, the 35-year-old posted career lows in receiving yards (823) and touchdowns (3), although he did lead the Chiefs in receptions (97).

During Super Bowl media week, Kelce insisted he planned to return in 2025. But his swift exit from the stadium in New Orleans, as well as his quiet showing, has led to question marks over his future, and the former All-Pro tight end is said to be pondering his options going forward.

The Chiefs have given the 35-year-old until March 14 to decide for the 2025 NFL season. While he enjoyed a vintage performance in the divisional round playoff win over the Houston Texans with seven catches for 117 yards and a touchdown, Kelce was quiet in the AFC Championship Game win against the Buffalo Bills with two catches for 19 yards before struggling in the Super Bowl.

Appearing on FOX Sports 1’s ‘The Facility’, McCoy insisted Kelce should take as much time as he needs to come to the best decision for him. He said: “He’s a leader for this team and I think a lot of great players, when they come to this point in their career where they’re not as great as they used to be or they’re getting older – Father Time gets everybody – and he’s like, ‘You know what, should I hang it up?’”

McCoy continued: “I think Kelce is such a good player that the Chiefs won’t cut him. All his cash, they’re going to give him that because he deserved it. The Chiefs would not be the same without Travis Kelce. They won’t be the same without him.”

McCoy signed for the Chiefs and won Super Bowl LIV alongside Kelce in 2020. He added: “Let’s just be honest here, man. As long as he wants to wait and take his time, he deserves it because he did not let them down in the Super Bowl. It was not his fault that they lost like that. It was not his fault their ass got whooped like that, so I’m going to say this respectfully: Kelce, I love you like a brother for sure, but take your time.

“If it takes you almost to training camp to come back 100 percent for the team, so what? He’s that good, he means that much to the franchise – why not?”

Speaking on his ‘New Heights’ podcast with his brother Jason, Kelce claimed he would assess each option and was not set to make “any crazy decisions”. He said: “I think I owe it to my teammates that, if I do come back, it’s going to be something that it’s a whole-hearted decision. Not half-a—– it.

“I’m fully here for them, and I think I could play. It’s just whether or not I’m motivated or it’s the best decision for me as a man, as a human, and as a person to take on all of that responsibility.”
