Emotions Overwhelm Serena Williams’ Ex-coach as He Revisits Her Teary-Eyed Moment From the Australian Open Vault
It was the 2015 Australian Open. Although Serena Williams was the top seed at the tournament, she hadn’t won this title for four consecutive years. However, the American legend produced her best and ended her title drought Down Under. She defeated her rival, Maria Sharapova, in the summit clash to clinch the trophy. Nearly a decade after her sumptuous feat, Williams’ ex-coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, got teary-eyed while remembering the victory.
Mouratoglou was a long-time coach of the 23-time Grand Slam champion. The two formed a superior partnership and won many titles together. As the French coach reminisced about Williams’ victory, emotions got the better of him.
The 2024 Australian Open is going on in full swing. Legendary French coach Patrick Mouratoglou came along for a cinema session during which he delved into some iconic victories. Among them was Williams’ 2015 Australian Open victory. As the American legend lifted the trophy, she got emotional, denoting how much the win meant to her.
Reminiscing that moment in a recent interview, Mouratoglou also got emotional, “That connection here, that’s with her for me was special so that’s why the emotion is so incredibly beautiful. That’s tears in her eyes there and it’s rare.”
It was quite an eventful year for Williams when she won the French Open and Wimbledon titles in the same year and was aiming for a Calendar Year Grand Slam. However, a major defeat in the US Open semifinal ended her hopes. Mouratoglou revealed her biggest disappointment at not completing the Calendar Year Grand Slam.
