Lia Thomas, a former University of Pennsylvania swimmer, has been at the center of discussions regarding transgender athletes in sports. In a 2022 interview with Sports Illustrated, she addressed critics who questioned her participation on the women’s team, stating, “The very simple answer is that I’m not a man. I’m a woman, so I belong on the women’s team.”
Throughout the 2021-2022 season, Thomas faced both support and opposition. Some teammates expressed concerns, while others stood by her right to compete. In May 2022, she reflected on her journey, emphasizing that transitioning was about personal happiness, not seeking a competitive edge. “I transitioned to be happy, to be true to myself,” she remarked.
Her achievements included winning the 500-yard freestyle at the NCAA Division I championships in March 2022, making her the first openly transgender athlete to secure such a title. However, this victory intensified debates about fairness and eligibility in women’s sports.
In response to the International Swimming Federation’s (FINA) decision in June 2022 to restrict transgender women from competing in women’s events, Thomas expressed disappointment, labeling the policy as discriminatory. “It is discriminatory and will only serve to harm all women,” she stated.
