​Lia Thomas, a former University of Pennsylvania swimmer, has been at the center of discussions regarding transgender athletes in sports. In a 2022 interview with Sports Illustrated, she addressed critics who questioned her participation on the women’s team, stating, “The very simple answer is that I’m not a man. I’m a woman, so I belong on the women’s team.” ​
