Do tego makabrycznego zabójstwa doszło w nocy z 26 na 27 marca 2022 r. Paweł spędzał ten wieczór z Eweliną Ż. – byli razem na kolacji, później na gali sportów walki, a następnie pojechali samochodem w okolice stadionu GKS Katowice, gdzie rozmawiali. Nagle pojawił się agresywny mężczyzna, który otworzył drzwi auta, zaatakował Pawła, a następnie wyszarpał go z pojazdu i w szaleńczym napadzie agresji zadał mu aż 50 ciosów nożem, po których mężczyzna zmarł. Wszystko to na oczach przerażonej, płaczącej i wołającej o pomoc kobiety. Zdaniem prokuratury, za zabójstwem 29-latka może stać Kamil Żyła, mąż kobiety, z którą wieczór spędził dziennikarz.
Prokurator postawił mu zarzut zabójstwa dziennikarza, wydano za nim także list gończy i czerwoną notę Interpolu, a jego poszukiwania przejęła specjalna grupa z Komendy Głównej Policji. Nie przyniosło to żadnych rezultatów. Kamil Żyła od trzech lat jest nieuchwytny dla wymiaru sprawiedliwości.
